CONSULTANCY & SUPERVISION
Psychological Consultancy
It is not always possible or indeed helpful to work directly with the child or young person. Factors such as age and stage of development, the child’s willingness to engage and their ability to identify and reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours all impact on an individual’s capacity to engage in talking therapy. A comprehensive psychological assessment can help inform thinking and decisions about what support is most appropriate for the young person, their family, and those supporting them.
At Hummingbird Psychology, we recognise that no child exists in isolation of their relationships and environment. We are passionate about working with the team around the child and are aware that by doing so, often leads to better outcomes. We work with a range of professionals from a variety of settings, including teachers, social workers, residential care staff and other health care professionals.
Psychological consultancy offers a protected space in which to reflect on the challenges of supporting children with complex needs. We support professionals and teams to make sense of the young people they are supporting, and understand them through a psychological lens, in the context of all of their experiences (past and present). Such understanding can significantly alter our feelings towards a young person and their behaviour and our approach to supporting them.
In consultation, we invite staff to consider and reflect upon the emotional impact of supporting the young people in their care. Working with young people with complex and challenging needs can be physically and emotionally exhausting. It is important for this to be acknowledged and for staff to be given permission to reflect on their experiences of this openly and without judgement.
At Hummingbird Psychology, we work with professionals and teams from a range of services, including teachers, social workers, residential staff teams, and other health care professionals. We are able to offer consultations as a one-off, or on a more regular basis. Get in touch to find out more.
“Relationships are the agents of change, and the most powerful therapy is human love”.

Clinical Supervision
At Hummingbird Psychology we offer clinical supervision to individuals and teams working to support children, young people, and families with complex needs.
We work closely with a number of services to provide a protected space in which staff are encouraged to reflect on the challenges associated with their role. We welcome case discussion and support staff in thinking psychologically about the young people and families they are working with, and how best to support them.
