PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT

A HOLISTIC APPROACH

At Hummingbird Psychology we work with children and young people experiencing a range of social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. We take a holistic approach to assessment and consider all facets of a child’s world, in an attempt to understand and make sense of their difficulties and why they might have developed.

We work collaboratively with the parent and child to develop a shared understanding of the child’s needs and strengths, in the context of their experiences, past and present. In doing so we are curious about all aspects relating to the child’s development (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive) and aim to develop a comprehensive understanding of family history, significant life events and experiences of trauma.

We believe that positive outcomes for children strongly depend on home, school and other services working together in a joined-up, collaborative way. In this vein, we aim to support the family by bringing the professionals and services that support the child together to ensure a shared and comprehensive understanding of difficulties and associated needs, to ensure consistency of approach.

The assessment process is vital in helping us to fully understand the difficulties and to provide recommendations for therapeutic interventions and/or support.

“Children are not blank slates for which the past can be rubbed out, but human beings who carry their previous experiences with them and whose behaviour in the present has been profoundly affected by what has gone before”.
